The North American division of BMW Motorrad has issued a safety recall concerning 2009 model year K 1300S and K 1300GT motorcycles, due to a
problem with handlebar switches. The German motorcycle manufacturer, however, did not reveal the exact number of units affected.

In a notification posted on the official website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW explains that the switches might fail, which could increase the risk of a crash and have serious consequences on the riders' safety.

“BMW is recalling certain model year 2009 motorcycles. The switches on the handlebars for both the direction indicator and the emergency engine off/engine-start functions may fail,” the safety recall stated.

BMW K 1300 SThe direct consequence of such a problem is quite obvious, as it might cause the engine to stall. If this incident occurs while the motorcycle is being driven, the driver would be unable to maintain speed or accelerate and therefore it would raise the risk of crash, especially at higher speeds.

“In such a case, the directional indicator and/or the emergency engine-off/start functions would be rendered inoperative. In some cases, engine stalling could also result increasing the risk of a crash,” the company mentioned in the advisory posted on the NHTSA website.

Just as expected, all operations will be conducted free of charge through BMW Motorrad's authorized US dealership network. However, the manufacturer hasn’t provided an owner notification schedule yet. “Dealers will inspect and replace the necessary components free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact BMW at 1300-831-1117,” it said.
